What is a Serengeti safari?
A Serengeti safari is a guided wildlife tour through Serengeti National Park, a 14,750 km² UNESCO ecosystem in northern Tanzania that hosts the annual Great Migration of roughly 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra. From Arusha, most travellers combine 3–5 nights in Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire on a 7–10 day Northern Circuit. Park fees in 2026 are $83 per adult per 24 hours (TANAPA fee schedule); full mid-range packages typically run $2,200–$3,400 per person for a 5-day Northern Circuit. Best time depends on what you want to see: June–October for Mara crossings, December–March for Ndutu calving, April–May for quiet roads and lower prices. Book direct with a TATO-licensed operator like us to skip the international middleman markup.
Great Migration — Month-by-Month
The herd never stops moving. Here's where they typically are and what's happening in each window. Dates shift year to year with rainfall — see our live migration tracker for current location.
| Months | Where the herd is | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Dec — Mar | Southern Serengeti / Ndutu | Calving season — 8,000 calves born per day at peak. Predator action is non-stop. |
| Apr — May | Central / Western Corridor | Herd moves north-west through long-grass plains. Quietest tourist months — best lodge deals. |
| Jun | Western Corridor / Grumeti River | Grumeti River crossings — fewer crowds than Mara crossings, equally dramatic. |
| Jul — Sep | Northern Serengeti / Kogatende, Lamai | Mara River crossings. Peak season. Book lodges 6-9 months out. |
| Oct — Nov | Northern → Central | Herd starts heading south as short rains return. Crossings still possible early October. |
The Four Serengeti Regions
Serengeti is too big to cover in one trip. Pick the region that matches your dates and what you want to see — most of our itineraries combine two.
Central Serengeti (Seronera)
The classic introduction. Open grassland, kopjes, and the Seronera River — year-round resident wildlife and the best leopard sightings in Tanzania.
Northern Serengeti (Kogatende, Lamai)
July to October home of the Mara River crossings. Quieter than the Mara Triangle in Kenya but the same wildebeest, same crocs, same drama.
Western Corridor (Grumeti)
May–July hub when the herd hits the Grumeti River. Grumeti Reserves border concession is one of East Africa's best-managed private wildlife areas.
Southern Serengeti / Ndutu
Officially Ngorongoro Conservation Area, but ecologically Serengeti. December–March calving grounds — the densest predator action of the year.

The Ultimate Serengeti Experience
Arusha-Based, TATO-Licensed, No Middlemen
When you book through international agents, 20–40% goes to commissions. We're based at the gateway to the Northern Circuit — that's our differentiator.
Local guides, full-time
Our driver-guides are Tanzanian, KIMSEA / TPS-trained, and average 8+ years in the parks. Radio chatter happens in Swahili — they hear about leopard sightings before you ever could.
TATO licensed
We're members of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators. That means insured vehicles, regulated guide standards, and a dispute path if anything ever goes sideways.
Custom-built itineraries
No fixed group departures — every trip is built for your dates, budget, fitness, and what you want to see. We push back when something doesn't make sense for your goals.
What people say after their Serengeti trip
Traveling with kids ages 8 and 11, we were nervous about a safari. Bald Eagle created a family-friendly itinerary that kept everyone engaged. The kids are still talking about the baby elephants in Tarangire!

Serengeti Safari FAQs
What is a Serengeti safari and what makes it different from other Tanzania parks?
A Serengeti safari is a guided wildlife tour through Serengeti National Park, a 14,750 km² ecosystem in northern Tanzania that hosts the annual Great Migration of about 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra. Unlike Ngorongoro Crater (compact, contained) or Tarangire (elephant-focused), the Serengeti is sprawling and seasonal — what you see depends entirely on which region you visit and when. Most guests combine 3-5 days in Serengeti with Ngorongoro, Tarangire, or Lake Manyara on a 7-10 day Northern Circuit itinerary starting from Arusha.
What is the best time to visit the Serengeti?
June to October is the most popular window — dry weather, easier wildlife spotting, and Mara River crossings in the north (July–early October). January to March is excellent for calving in the south near Ndutu. April and May (long rains) offer 30-40% lower prices and lush landscapes; the wildlife is still there, you just get muddier roads and lighter crowds.
How much does a Serengeti safari cost?
Budget 3-day safaris start around $1,100 per person; 5-day mid-range Northern Circuit safaris (Tarangire + Ngorongoro + Serengeti) typically run $2,200–$3,400 per person. Luxury fly-in safaris from $5,000 per person upward. Park fees alone are $83/24h adult for Serengeti, $83/24h for Ngorongoro, plus a $295 per-vehicle Crater service fee. See our full Tanzania safari cost guide for itemised breakdowns.
How many days do I need in the Serengeti?
A minimum of 3 nights inside the park is what we recommend — anything shorter and you spend most of your time on transit roads. 4-5 nights lets you cover two regions (e.g., Central and Northern, or Central and Ndutu) and see a Mara crossing if you time it right.
Do I need to book a Serengeti safari with a Tanzania-based operator?
Booking direct with a TATO-licensed local operator like us typically saves 20-40% versus international agents because you remove the middleman commission. You also get faster decision-making in the field — when a leopard sighting comes through the radio, your guide can change plans without going through three agency layers.
Is the Serengeti safe?
Yes. Serengeti National Park is patrolled by TANAPA rangers, has controlled access points, and you are with a professional driver-guide in a 4x4 the entire time on game drives. Tanzania has been politically stable since 1961. Standard safari precautions apply: stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms it's safe to step out, drink bottled water, and follow your camp's wildlife rules at night.
Can I see all of the Big Five in the Serengeti?
Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo — yes, regularly. Black rhino is the wild card; small populations exist around Moru Kopjes (central Serengeti) but sightings are rare. To guarantee Big Five, pair Serengeti with a day in Ngorongoro Crater where roughly 26 black rhinos live in a 260 km² caldera — about 95% of our 4-day Northern Circuit guests see all five.
What's the difference between Serengeti and Masai Mara?
Same ecosystem, different countries. Masai Mara is Kenya's 1,510 km² section; Serengeti is Tanzania's 14,750 km² section — about 10× larger. The Mara is more vehicle-dense during peak crossings; Serengeti is bigger, quieter, and most safaris combine it with Ngorongoro, which has no equivalent in Kenya. We work in Tanzania only and recommend Serengeti when scale and combination itineraries matter more than convenience flights into Nairobi.
