Best Time to Visit the Serengeti (By What You Want to See)

Most "best time" guides give one answer. The honest answer is four answers: river crossings, calving, predators, or value. Here's how to pick the right window for your trip — written by guides who run Serengeti safaris every month of the year.

Quick answer

The best time to visit the Serengeti depends entirely on what you want to see. July to October is best for Mara River crossings in the north. December to March is best for calving and predator action in the south. April and May is best for value — 30-40% lower lodge rates and far fewer vehicles. November is the shoulder window. Wildlife is excellent year-round because resident populations of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo never leave. Don't pick a month based on "weather" alone — pick on the experience you want.

If you want Mara River crossings: July–October

The wildebeest herd reaches the Mara River in northern Serengeti around late June/early July. Crossings happen unpredictably until the herd starts heading south in mid-October. Base yourself out of a tented camp in Kogatende or Lamai sectors for at least 3 nights. One-day visits rarely catch a crossing — you need patience. Our 2025 group spent two days at the river bank before the first crossing started; on day three they crossed five times in three hours.

If you want calving and predator action: December–March

The herd is on the southern short-grass plains, including Ndutu. From mid-January through mid-March, around 500,000 calves are born. Cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and wild dogs concentrate to hunt. This is the densest predator action of the year. Photographers love this window — open plains, low grass, dramatic backlight.

Late February is our personal favourite for first-time photographers. We had a guest in Feb 2024 capture three cheetah hunts in one morning. That's not a normal October day.

If you want value: April–May

Long rains. Lodge rates drop 30-40%. TANAPA park fees stay the same year-round at $83/24h adult, but your accommodation cost is the bigger lever. Game viewing is still excellent — animals don't leave the park because it rains. Roads can be muddy; a good 4x4 and an experienced guide handle this without drama. Birding peaks in this window — migrant species pass through.

If you want classic dry-season game viewing: June and November

Shoulder months. June is the start of dry season and prices are climbing but not yet at peak. November is short-rains starting; less rain than April-May, lower prices than July-October, animals back in the south. Both are good compromise months.

Weather across the year

    • December — March: Hot days (80-90°F / 27-32°C), warm nights. Short rains in Dec, then drier. Excellent visibility on the southern plains.
    • April — May: Long rains. Daily afternoon downpours, mostly. Roads muddy in patches. Mornings often clear and beautiful.
    • June — September: Dry, dusty, cooler nights (down to 50°F / 10°C in the highlands and crater rim). Layered clothing essential.
    • October — November: Short rains return mid-October but are usually brief. Pleasant temperatures.

Park fees and crowds

Park fees are flat year-round per the TANAPA fee schedule. What changes is how busy the parks feel. July-October has the most vehicles — northern Serengeti can get 20+ Land Cruisers at a single crossing point. April-May, you might be the only vehicle for an hour. We don't think crowds are a deal-breaker for Northern Serengeti in peak season — it's still a 14,750 km² park — but it's something to factor in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the very best month for a Serengeti safari?

For maximum wildlife density and predator action: February. For the river crossings spectacle: August. For value: May. There is no single best month — it depends on your goal.

Should I avoid the rainy season?

No. Rain doesn't ruin a Serengeti trip — the wildlife stays, the lodges stay open, and prices drop. You'll have wetter mornings and muddier roads. If you can't tolerate any rain risk, July-October is your window.

How does Serengeti weather compare to Ngorongoro?

Ngorongoro Crater rim sits at 7,500 ft (2,300 m) — significantly cooler than Serengeti, especially at night. June-August nights at the rim drop to 40°F (4°C). Pack a fleece even in dry season.

Can I see the Big Five year-round?

Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo — yes, year-round. Black rhino is rare year-round; pair with a day in Ngorongoro Crater for a near-guaranteed rhino sighting.

What's the cheapest month to safari in Tanzania?

April or May. Long rains. 30-40% off lodge rates. We do excellent budget Serengeti trips in this window — see our cost guide.
