6-12 years
Best for: Classic 5-7 day safari, all Northern Circuit parks, junior ranger programs, nature walks
Pro tip: Give them binoculars and a wildlife checklist. Best age for engagement — they'll spot animals before you do.
13-17 years
Best for: Full itineraries including Serengeti, walking safaris (14+), Kilimanjaro day hike, Zanzibar activities
Pro tip: Teens love photography challenges, night drives (where available), and adventure activities. Don't treat them like little kids.

Family Safari FAQs
What is the best age for a family safari in Tanzania?
Children aged 6+ get the most from a safari — they can sit still in a vehicle, use binoculars, and remember the experience. However, some lodges welcome children from age 3+ with special programs. For toddlers (under 3), we recommend shorter drives and lodges with pools/play areas. Teenagers absolutely love it and often become the most enthusiastic wildlife spotters.
Is Tanzania safe for children?
Very safe. You are in a vehicle with an experienced guide at all times during game drives. Lodges have security and are fenced or in safe areas. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all ages. We select family lodges with features like shallow pools, high balcony railings, and no open waterways near rooms.
How much does a family safari cost?
Family safaris range from $300-800 per person per day (children often get 30-50% discounts at lodges). A typical 5-day family safari for 2 adults + 2 children costs $5,000-12,000 depending on accommodation level. Budget camping options start lower. We design to your budget.
Which parks are best for families?
Ngorongoro Crater (Big Five in one day, short drives), Tarangire (elephants everywhere, baobab trees), and Lake Manyara (tree-climbing lions, flamingos) are perfect for families. Serengeti is excellent for older kids (6+) but requires longer drives between sightings. We typically recommend a 2-3 park combo for families.
Can children do a walking safari or Kilimanjaro?
Walking safaris have a minimum age of 12-16 depending on the conservancy. Kilimanjaro has no official age limit but we recommend 12+ for the full summit and offer shorter hikes (Shira Plateau, Day Walks) for younger adventurers. Cultural visits and nature walks around lodges are great for all ages.
