About Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Africa's most magical places - a remote wilderness where chimpanzees have been habituated over 50 years and Lake Tanganyika's crystal waters lap at forested shores. Getting here is an adventure in itself (small plane to a bush airstrip, then boat transfer), but the reward is a wildlife experience unlike any other.
The park's 1,650 km² protects the Mahale Mountains (rising to 2,462m) and their forest-dwelling inhabitants. The star attraction is a community of around 60 habituated chimpanzees - spending time with them as they forage, groom, and interact is a profound, emotional experience that connects you to our closest relatives in ways gorilla or safari can't match.
Beyond chimps, Mahale offers empty beaches on Lake Tanganyika (the world's longest and second-deepest lake), hiking through montane forest, and swimming in the lake's remarkably clear, bilharzia-free waters. Only two small camps operate here, limiting visitors to a privileged few who can truly feel alone in wild Africa.
