About Katavi National Park
Katavi National Park is Tanzania at its wildest - a 4,471 km² wilderness in the country's remote southwest that sees fewer visitors in a year than the Serengeti sees in a day. This is safari as it existed decades ago: raw, unmanicured, and teeming with wildlife that has rarely seen a vehicle.
The park's seasonal floodplains and permanent pools create exceptional wildlife concentrations, particularly during the dry season (May-October). The Katuma River draws buffalo herds numbering in the thousands, hippo pools pack with hundreds of animals, and the competition for space creates constant predator drama. Crocodiles reach enormous sizes here, and lions are bold and numerous.
Reaching Katavi requires effort - a charter flight or a very long drive - and accommodation options are limited. But for safari purists seeking authentic wilderness without the crowds, Katavi delivers an experience that's increasingly rare anywhere in Africa. You might be the only visitors in the entire park.
