About Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park (formerly the northern sector of Selous Game Reserve) is Africa's largest national park at over 30,000 km² - larger than Switzerland. Named after Tanzania's founding father Julius Nyerere, this vast wilderness offers an exclusive safari experience that's virtually impossible to find in the crowded northern parks.
The Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest, flows through the park creating a network of channels, lakes, and wetlands that support extraordinary wildlife concentrations. Boat safaris here are a highlight - drifting past basking hippos, enormous crocodiles, and elephants drinking at the water's edge. Walking safaris bring you even closer to nature in a way that vehicle-based safaris simply cannot match.
Nyerere is a stronghold for endangered African wild dogs, with an estimated 1,300 individuals - one of the largest populations on the continent. Lions, leopards, and hyenas are common, and the park supports one of the world's largest elephant populations despite decades of poaching pressure.
