About Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is the southern circuit's most accessible destination - just 4 hours from Dar es Salaam with no flights required. Its 3,230 km² of grasslands, scattered acacia, and miombo woodland earned it the nickname "Little Serengeti" for its similar landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing. The Mkata Floodplain in the park's north offers classic African savannah scenery with reliable game viewing. Lions are commonly seen, often lazing on the plains or hunting the abundant zebra and wildebeest. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and hippos are daily sightings, while leopards and wild dogs require more luck. Mikumi is perfect for time-pressed visitors wanting a genuine safari experience without flying, or as a weekend getaway from Dar es Salaam. It also combines beautifully with Ruaha (via a scenic overland transfer) or Udzungwa Mountains for hiking, creating a diverse southern circuit itinerary.
