About Moshi
Moshi is the charming gateway town to Mount Kilimanjaro, offering the best views of Africa's highest peak from its bustling streets and surrounding coffee farms. This vibrant town of 200,000 people serves as the base for most Kilimanjaro climbs and offers a authentic slice of Tanzanian life far removed from the safari circuit.
The town sits at 900 meters elevation on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, providing a pleasant climate and lush, green surroundings. The local Chagga people are renowned farmers, and the coffee and banana plantations that blanket the slopes offer fascinating cultural tours. Walking through the villages, you'll learn about traditional Chagga irrigation systems, medicine, and customs that have sustained this community for centuries.
Moshi is also the departure point for the Marangu, Rongai, and Machame routes up Kilimanjaro. Most trekkers spend at least one night here before their climb, and it's the perfect place to do last-minute gear checks, meet your climbing crew, and acclimatize slightly before the adventure begins.
