About Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park is unique in East Africa - the only wildlife park where the savannah meets the Indian Ocean. Here you can watch elephants stroll on the beach, see lions in the morning and go swimming in the afternoon, and combine a genuine safari with a beach holiday in one location.
The park's 1,100 km² encompasses coastal forest, mangroves, savannah, and the Wami River, creating diverse habitats. Wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, though densities are lower than the famous northern parks. The real appeal is the combination - game drive, boat safari on the Wami (with hippos and crocodiles), and beach time with cold drinks.
Saadani is also wonderfully accessible - just 3 hours from Dar es Salaam by road, making it perfect for a short break from the city or as an alternative to flying to Zanzibar. Green sea turtles nest on the beaches, and boat trips to the mangroves reveal a different ecosystem entirely.
