About Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo is one of Tanzania's most historically significant towns - a former major slave trading port and the colonial capital of German East Africa. Its name means "lay down your heart" in Swahili, referring to the despair felt by slaves who knew that once they reached this coast, they would likely never see their homeland again. Today, Bagamoyo is a quiet, atmospheric town with well-preserved Arab and German colonial architecture, crumbling ruins, and a beautiful beach. The Kaole Ruins just south of town date to the 13th century and represent some of the oldest Islamic structures in East Africa. The College of Arts produces some of Tanzania's best musicians and artists. For travelers, Bagamoyo makes an interesting stop between Dar es Salaam and Saadani National Park, or as a beach break with more cultural depth than Zanzibar's resort areas. Swimming is best at high tide, and the sunsets over the Indian Ocean from the old waterfront are spectacular.
