Tanzania Safari Packing List for Women: Practical, Tested, Local

What to actually pack for a Tanzania safari as a woman — built from a decade of guests asking the same questions and the small-but-frustrating things that catch people out. Pair with our general packing list.

Quick answer

For a 7-10 day Tanzania safari, women travellers need: 3-4 sets of neutral-coloured (khaki, olive, beige) lightweight cotton or technical clothing, sturdy closed-toe trainers or hiking shoes, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a thin fleece for cool early mornings (especially Ngorongoro Crater), tampons or pads brought from home (limited availability outside cities), modesty layers for Stone Town/Maasai village visits, and a sports bra for bumpy game-drive roads. Most lodges offer same-day laundry, so you don't need to overpack. Avoid bright colours and pure white. Avoid camo prints (illegal in some East African countries to wear in public).

Clothing essentials

    • 3-4 long-sleeve safari shirts — neutral colours, lightweight, technical or cotton. Long sleeves protect from sun and tsetse flies.
    • 2 pairs convertible/zip-off pants — practical for warm midday and cool evenings.
    • 1-2 pairs shorts — for hot afternoons at lodges.
    • 3-4 t-shirts/tank tops — for layering and lodge wear.
    • 1 thin fleece or lightweight jacket — Ngorongoro Crater rim is cool early morning (40-50°F).
    • 1 packable rain jacket — even dry season can have surprise showers.
    • Sleepwear and 7-10 sets underwear (laundry is fast).
    • Sports bra — game-drive roads are bumpy. Worth packing 2.
    • Swimsuit — most mid-range lodges have pools; Zanzibar extension is mandatory.

Footwear

    • Closed-toe walking/hiking shoes for game drives, Maasai village visits, walking safaris.
    • Sandals for lodges, Zanzibar, evening downtime.
    • Compression socks for the long-haul flight.

Specifically for women

    • Tampons/pads from home: Limited brand availability in Tanzania; stock up before travel. Period products may not be available at remote camps.
    • Modest layer (long skirt or wrap): For Stone Town (Zanzibar is majority Muslim — knees and shoulders covered respects local norms). Also for Maasai village visits.
    • Sun protection on chest/shoulders: Open-roof safari vehicles mean direct sun for hours. A scarf or buff helps.
    • Hair tie/headband: Wind through the pop-up roof tangles hair fast.
    • Wet wipes/intimate wipes: Long days, dusty roads, sometimes a long way between bathroom stops.
    • Antibacterial cream: For small cuts that can get infected in dusty conditions.

Cosmetics and toiletries

    • SPF 50+ sunscreen — equatorial sun is brutal. Reapply often.
    • Lip balm with SPF
    • Insect repellent — DEET 30%+ for evenings (not for use during the day in vehicles; we use citronella)
    • Moisturiser — air is very dry on the plains
    • Mascara/concealer: If you wear makeup, less is more. Light makeup only — heat and dust will ruin a full face.
    • Dry shampoo: Game-drive days mean less hair-washing; dry shampoo bridges the gap

Tech

    • Phone + charger + universal adapter (Tanzania uses UK-style 3-pin)
    • Power bank — useful in tented camps with intermittent solar
    • Camera (DSLR or mirrorless preferred over phone for wildlife) + extra battery
    • Memory cards (more than you think — 32-64GB minimum)

Documents

    • Passport with 6+ months validity and 2 blank pages
    • Tanzania visa (e-visa printout or cash for visa-on-arrival)
    • Yellow fever certificate (if from endemic country)
    • Travel insurance documents
    • Booking confirmations
    • Some emergency cash USD ($300-500 in clean post-2006 bills)

What NOT to bring

    • Camo prints/military patterns: Restricted in Tanzania (and across East Africa). Don't wear or pack these.
    • Plastic bags: Single-use plastic bags banned in Tanzania since 2019. Don't pack them.
    • Pure white clothing: Will be tan after one day on the road. Pointless to pack.
    • Heavy jewellery: Doesn't suit safari and is theft risk in cities. Stud earrings + a ring max.
    • Heels: No reason to bring them. Lodges are casual.

Laundry strategy

Most mid-range and luxury lodges offer same-day laundry for $5-15 per load. Tented camps may not, so bring a travel detergent sheet for hand-washing essentials. Plan to do laundry at the midpoint of your trip — pack 5 days of clothes for a 10-day trip.

Modest dress for Zanzibar and Maasai villages

Zanzibar is 95%+ Muslim. In Stone Town and traditional areas, knees and shoulders covered shows respect. Beach areas (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) are relaxed — bikinis on the beach are fine, but covered up walking to dinner. Maasai villages similarly: long skirts or zip-off pants, a scarf at hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are tampons available in Tanzania?

In Arusha and Dar es Salaam supermarkets, yes. At remote camps and on safari, no. Bring from home.

Should I wear long pants in 90°F heat?

Yes for game drives — sun and tsetse fly protection outweighs the heat. Convert to shorts at lodges.

Can I wear sleeveless tops?

Yes at lodges. For Stone Town, Maasai villages, and conservative areas, cover shoulders.

Is there a dress code for Ngorongoro Crater?

No formal code, but pack a fleece — it's cool early morning. Layers more than warmth.

How do I stay clean on a 10-day safari?

Daily showers at every lodge (we don't book lodges without ensuite bathrooms unless you specifically request budget camping). Wet wipes for between game drives. Laundry mid-trip.
